Recently, I decided to give essential oils a try. I wanted an additional tool to help me manage stress and anxiety, which have become bigger issues for me since starting medical school. After doing some research, I decided that essential oils could potentially benefit me. I have only been using essential oils for a couple of weeks, but they have already helped me in unexpected (but awesome!) ways:
My sleep is better. I have not been getting enough sleep the past few weeks due to exams, but I have definitely noticed an improvement in my sleep quality. I am a very light sleeper, which means I usually don’t feel well rested even when I get enough sleep. Since I began diffusing lavender oil whenever I go to bed, my FitBit has even recorded improved sleep! Take a look:

I have an alternative way to take care of headaches. I am a sufferer of frequent headaches. They almost always won’t go away unless I take ibuprofen. One morning, I woke up with a headache I still had from the night before. I also felt extra sleepy, so I diffused some peppermint essential oil to help me wake up while I got ready and had coffee. By the time I left for class, I noticed that my headache was gone! This NEVER happens. To make sure it wasn’t a fluke, I diffused peppermint again when I had another headache, and it helped me once more.
My focus is improved. Usually, I have a hard time studying at home because it is difficult for me to stay focused. However, when diffusing lemon essential oil with a blend called “stress away,” I have noticed that I feel less overwhelmed and more focused on the task at hand. Less anxious feelings and no more cleaning my entire apartment to procrastinate ;).
I’ve been snacking less. When I’m very stressed, I love to snack, but sometimes that snacking can get out of hand. Adding a drop of lemon and peppermint essential oils to my water helps me suppress that inner snack demon while also keeping me extra hydrated.
Although I am new to essential oils, I am already experiencing first hand how they can be helpful to have in one’s home. I do not believe essential oils should be used as a complete alternative to medications or your physician’s medical advice. However, I do think they can be beneficial to incorporate into your overall wellness regimen. If you are interested, make sure you do your research and ask your physician if it is okay for you to use them, especially if you are taking any medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any health problems.
